Yoga guru and psychotropic crooner [lastfm]Gonjasufi[/lastfm] releases mini-album MU.ZZ.LE, furthering the boundaries of every genre imaginable in one fell swoop. A veritable time capsule of sound, Sumach Ecks’ latest effort blends soft vocals and crumbling psychedelic/funk samples from yesteryear into one dystopian soundscape that will hit you harder than you’ll be prepared to admit.

Produced with San Diego’s Psychopop, MU.ZZ.LE adopts an archaeological tone, crisped and crackling from decades of heavy sun. Ecks’ voice peaks through the production with spell-binding effect. His voice akin to a struggling croon yet his words heavy with exploratory socio-political commentary, the result is preternatural. MU.ZZ.LE sounds like a shaman channeling the voices of the dead from a desert cave into whispered prophecies of the apocalypse. “Nickels and Dimes” laments, “Venom” saunters, “Skin” bubbles with blistered static. It’s easy to label this “psychedelic music” and move on, but don’t let the low fidelity misguide you; this is soul music from a man privy to the world’s deepest woes.
