Decades from now, the super-veteran of the rave, the bald-headed emo vegan will be remembered as one of electronic music’s knights in shining armor. His music is always nearly a hit (“Go,” “Alone,” Honey” and “Natural Blues”) fusing electronic music with punk, techno and flashes of gospel, blues and hip-hop. While [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Moby[/lastfm]‘s tenth album Destroyed isn’t quite a perfect example of that flavor, it’s done flawlessly with that incomparable Moby touch.
Destroyed winds up on the opposite end of the sonic spectrum from, say, Richard D. James’s ([lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Aphex Twin[/lastfm]) darker, ambient moments. Melancholic songs like “Broken Places,” “Be The One” and “Rockets” evoke solitude from the perspective of an artist who spends a lot of time on the road all the while songs like the warm audible hisses found in “Sevastopol” and the meld of sweeping, circular bluesy melodies in “Lie Down In The Darkness” suggest a Moby left with some optimism.
“If I had to sum it up I would describe it as: “a soundtrack for empty cities at 2 a.m” the musician wrote on his website. “it was primarily written late at night in cities when i felt like i was the only person awake (or alive)…i wanted to show a different side of touring and traveling. a side that is often mundane, disconcerting, and occasionally beautiful.”
Moby also adds the majority of the album’s recording was done at odd times of the day. “I don’t sleep very well when I travel. And as a result, I tend to be awake in cities when everyone else is asleep. That’s where this album, and the pictures that accompany it come from.”
With an appreciation for tone and an immense amount of passion for music, Destroyed dips deep into the subconscious realm of psychic vibrations; the resulting compositions are ethereal and nearly silent created by the product of an artistic deviant playing broken-down equipment in hotel rooms at 3 a.m. Rave on!
