Street Date Performance: G. Love Plays Songs Off New Album “Fixin’ to Die”

The happy-go-lucky [lastfm]G. Love[/lastfm] doesn’t seem like a man fixin’ to end it all. So the title of his new Brushfire Records album was a bit of a head-scratcher at first. Fixin’ to Die – really? Luckily the G man himself paid a visit to Street Date‘s New York studios to play some of the new tunes, and explain the inspiration behind the album and its title. What follows is an intimate portrait of an artist trying something different, and finding himself all over again in the process. Oh, and did we mention that recent GRAMMY performers the [lastfm]Avett Brothers[/lastfm] play a key role?

Fixin’ to Die is a well-crafted combination of new material written by [lastfm]G. Love[/lastfm] and his collaborators Scott and Seth Avett (those talented brothers). Digging deep into a catalogue of American blues legends, the album includes covers of [lastfm]Blind Willie McTell[/lastfm] (“You’ve Got to Die”) and [lastfm]Bukka White[/lastfm] (the title track “Fixin’ to Die”). Two other choice cover tunes make welcome additions to the set: [lastfm]Lou Reed[/lastfm]‘s “Pale Blue Eyes” and [lastfm]Paul Simon[/lastfm]‘s “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover.” Mr. G discusses these song choices, and his first meeting with the [lastfm]Avett Brothers[/lastfm], in our exclusive interview below.
