Album Review: Jamie Foxx – “Best Night Of My Life”

We need to research new metals for a 100-million-selling artists like [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Jamie Foxx[/lastfm]. Forget platinum–this r&b crooner has gone magnesium. The R&B singer is at it again with Best Night of My Life, Autotuning his way through a feast of sizzling postmodern synth beats and sultry love ballads thanks to superstar artists like [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Justin Timberlake[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]T.I.[/lastfm] to [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Ludacris[/lastfm] to lend some clever rhymes.

No stranger to working with a cavalcade of hip-hop heavyweights, Jamie Foxx isn’t short of fans either. The success the actor/comedian/crooner has achieved on every stage and level of his career is extremely notable. Straight off the bat, “370,386 listeners have scrobbled his hits 2,965,548 times so far,” according to a recent Last.fm Trends report based around his performance via Last.fm users scrobbles.  Not surprisingly, too,  songs like  “Unpredictable” released in 2005 and “Blame It” in ’09 continue to dominate the airways and in clubs across the nations, probably in response to his fourth album,  Best Night of My Life; specifically its catchy single “Winner” featuring the album’s more high-powered guest spots from [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Justin Timberlake[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]T.I.[/lastfm]. The song, too,  ran as the unofficial anthem of the NBA Playoffs last year. That’s a total win if you ask me.

That’s not to say the other tracks on the album are not winners. The title track featuring newcomer [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Wiz Khalifa[/lastfm] “Fall For Your Type” featuring [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Drake [/lastfm]is a  highlight with Foxx singing;  “Baby, I love the smell of your perfume / And if we were kids, I’d be breaking curfew to stay up with you,” but there are other vocal serenades throughout the album that further reveal Foxx’s songwriting excellence in tracks like “Gorgeous” and “Let Me Get You On Your Toes” reminding us that Foxx is great entertainer, and has been a true student of vocal serenades and whipping up bedroom-centric lyrics like his predecessors [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Ginuwine[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]R. Kelly[/lastfm].

Our friends at MySpace are holding a premiere party for Best Night. Check some of the streaming songs,  then come back Tuesday night at 5 pm PT/8pm ET to watch Foxx perform his classic and soon-to-be hits live! This amazing Live on Letterman concert is presented by AT&T.
