[lastfm]Jay-Z[/lastfm], he’s a business, man, not a business man. Hustler, hit maker, business executive, American icon – the guy has done it all. He’s a larger than life figure, and much of his career has been dedicated to mythologizing his own persona. The more he raps about being the greatest, it seems, the more we believe him. The newly released Hits Collection Vol. 1, however, provides ample evidence of the true reason behind Hova’s success – the hits. Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last 15 years, you will be very familiar with many of these songs, some you might know by heart.
The compilation tracklist boasts megahits like “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” “99 Problems,” “Dirt Off Your Shoulder,” and… well, they’re pretty much all megahits. My only complaint is, what about “Reasonable Doubt”??? There isn’t one track from [lastfm]Jay-Z[/lastfm]‘s incredible debut album on this collection!
Oh well, maybe that’s why this is only Volume 1 of The Hits Collection. The collection is definitely heavy on his later material, it could be that he’s working backwards through his catalog. At any rate, this is a great introduction for anyone looking to get into [lastfm]Jay-Z[/lastfm].
